Writing and Design: Here’s Why Your Website Needs Both
Hey loveee bug we are back 💃🏽
And today we’re touching on one of my favorite topics writing and design and why your website needs both!
So, one of the top questions I get is about writing and design — and how I work them together to create a super-effective website.
A site that not only looks good, but also speaks directly to your audience and builds the solid connection you want.
So, what some people may not know is that, at my core, I’m both a writer and designer.
Not only am I an author, but I’m the primary writer here at Blogging for Africa. And let me tell you friend — we loveee mixing writing and design around here.
Weaving the two together isn’t just my forte — it’s what gives content that perfect chef’s kiss.
So let’s talk about writing and design from my perspective: how they come together, and why both are essential if you want your website to win BIG.

First, Let’s Talk About Writing
When it comes to writing, it’s easy to think of it as technical — putting words together, shaping a blog post, or creating product descriptions.
And yes, that’s part of it. But writing is more than a science — it’s an art.
Words they are alive. They carry energy. They create images, they stir raw emotion.
Everything you see in society started with words.
An idea written down, shaped 👉🏽 and then brought into reality✨️
Too often, I see websites treat writing like a checklist — what’s mandatory, what’s basic — but they miss the energetic piece that make the words come alive.
Here’s an example: let’s say I had a weight-loss website selling smoothies.
I could say, ‘Top 5 smoothies to help you lose weight.’ Technically fine… but a little flat. It can be elevated.
Here’s what could be said instead: ‘Top 5 smoothies to help you burn the 10 pounds you thought you’d never lose.’
Now love bug, that’s just me freestyling — but you see the difference, right? One is information. The other carries authentic energy and transformation.
Writing at its best isn’t just functional — it’s intuitive. It’s not just about telling a story, it’s about feeling the story.
But What About Design
Alongside writing, one of my favorite things on the planet is design. Being able to take an idea or goal and bring it into reality through design — that’s my sweet forte.
And here’s the thing: the best designs usually start with words. First, there’s the idea written down. Then come the visuals.
Understanding Website Design
Design is another way of translating your vision, your passion, your message — into a physical element your audience can see and feel.
And your website is the house for that.
Now, a lot of people (and even designers I know) treat website design as purely technical.
Homepage, About page, color schemes, components.
But friend, website design is deeper than that.
Excellent design isn’t just about structure.
It’s about capturing your message, your products and your brand essence — all in one.
That’s what turns a site from mandatory pages to every page bring an experience.
How Writing and Design Work Together
This is where the magic happens. Writing and design are not in conflict — they complement each other beautifully.
Think of it like this: you can have a stunning design, but if the writing doesn’t speak directly towards the heart of your audience, the connection can fall flat.
And if the writing is powerful, but the design feels unorganized or outdated, people will unfortunately leave before they read anything.
Why understanding your audience is key 🔑
So, heres the thing every audience has different concerns.
An auto mechanic’s customers want reassurance about trust and reliability.
A health and wellness coach’s audience wants encouragement and results.
Writing captures those emotions, desires, and needs. Design gives that writing a home — one that’s trustworthy and compelling.
Writing does the emotional anchoring. Design brings it to life✨️. Together, they make a website that doesn’t just look good, but one that’s stunning and effective.

How Writing and Design Directly Affect SEO
So heres a little secret that unfortunately is easily overlooked writing and design directly impact your SEO — and yes friend, Google pays close attention to both.
When it comes to ranking websites, Google looks at a ton of factors. One of the big ones is UX (user experience).
This includes your layout, mobile functionality, and page speed.
Having a well crafted website can significantly help your SEO because it creates a great experience.
Here’s an example: if someone lands on your site and stays for a long period of time that decreases your bounce rate.
A low bounce rate tells Google your doing something right — that ‘something’? Probably has to do with giving your audience a vibe, an experience that they want again and again.
However, if people come to your website and immediately leave Google also notices.
And what it means is there’s something going on thats making people come to your website and immediately leave at high rates.
Think of it like this: if a brick-and-mortar restaurant had people walk in and then immediately walk out, something’s off.
In terms of your website, it could be too many instant pop-ups, clashing color combinations, overwhelming navigation menus, slow site speed, a cluttered layout, or not being mobile-friendly — just to name a few.
Whatever the reason, if people don’t stay, Google notices.
And that is why design matters.
A compelling design keeps visitors on your website longer, which signals to Google that your site is worth showing in search results.
And writing it plays a BIG role here.
Strong writing keeps visitors engaged once they’re on your site. It reduces bounce rates, builds trust, and encourages readers to explore more.
So, when we work with our clients and inside of our upcoming Global Blogging Business packages, we don’t separate design and writing.
👉🏽 We combine them.
So here are a few stats to know:
In Conclusion
Here’s what you need to know: design grabs attention, and writing keeps it.
Both matter.
Blending writing with elevated design is how you create a memorable experience with your website.
So, love bug — your words and your visuals are a team. Bring them together, and your website becomes more than a page… it becomes an experience.
