How to Submit a Sitemap to Google — A Step-by-Step Guide

Alright friend, It’s time to finally get your site on Google’s radar — where it belongs.

Because lets be real you didn’t build your site for it to be sitting in the shadows.

🥇Step 1: Make sure you have a sitemap

If your website is already set up on a platform like Showit, WordPress or Sqaurespace — good news: your sitemap may already be auto-generated for you.

It usually looks something like this:

yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

But if you’re not sure, go ahead and try typing /sitemap.xml after your domain name to see if anything pops up.

If it does — boom, you’re good.

Once your site is verified, look for the “Sitemaps” option in the left-hand menu.

From there:

Type in the tail end of your sitemap URL (just the sitemap.xml part — not the full domain)

Hit Submit.

After you hit submit, give it a few minutes and then refresh the page. Google will usually show you a message that your sitemap was successfully submitted.

📌 If it says “couldn’t fetch,” double check your sitemap URL. Make sure it’s actually live and published on your site.

🔍 Step 4: Verify That Your Sitemap Was Submitted Correctly

Once you hit submit, stay right there — Google will give you instant feedback.

Here’s what you’re looking for:

✅ A status that says “Success” under Status

📅 A submission date and last read date

❌ If it says “Error” or “Couldn’t fetch,” something’s off — usually a typo or formatting issue. Just double-check your link and resubmit.

Side Note: It might take a little while for Google to crawl every page — but once you see “Success,” you’re officially in motion.
