How to Build a Business You’ll Love — Kendrick Lamar Style!
Why build your business Kendrick Lamar style? Because you need to be able to say: “They not like US, they not like us, they not like us…” — and actually mean it hehe.
Let me show you what that “they not like us” energy can look like for your business. 👇🏽
Hey, love bug! 💛
Let’s have a little heart-to-heart, shall we?
Building your dream business is totally possible, but I have to let you in on a little secret…
It’s going to require you to go against the grain — and really embrace you and the things you truly love.
So here’s the thing: if you’re anything like me (and most entrepreneurs), the moment you start showing up online, you’ll start hearing about all the ways you can make money.
And if you’re also like me and most business owners, especially in the beginning, it’s so tempting to take those methods and run with them. Or at the least, experiment with different business ideas and marketing strategies.
And honestly? I actually encourage that when you’re just getting started. Because the truth is, entrepreneurship and business? Naturally comes with a lot of experimentation (which is fun).
However — this blog post isn’t about testing a new shiny strategy. It’s about something much deeper.
This is about building a business that’s centered around legacy.
Because when you build a business you love, it doesn’t just last — it lights you up.
So, how do you do that?
Well, in this post, we’re diving into how to avoid building a business that barely checks the boxes — and instead, create something that feels deeply aligned, purposeful, and yes… FUN.
1. So first things first—YOU Matter.
How many times have you been told—whether in business or life:
“That’s just risky…”
“That’s a bit far-fetched…”
Or my personal least favorite: “If you don’t do it this way, you’re going to fail.”
Yikes. That last one I always found strange because let’s be for real 💁🏽♀️
But here’s the truth:
YOU. Matter!
Whether you are or aren’t the face of your business, it’s so important that you’re building something that’s infused with YOU—your values, your beliefs, your energy, and your creativity. You’ve got to learn to do things your way. Because that’s where the magic lives.
Build a business you love—by infusing it with who you are at the core.
Why is this such a big deal? Because, love bug, it’s how your brand becomes memorable. It’s how it stands out in a sea of sameness.
Here’s a question:
Have you ever seen a brand, whether it’s a personal brand or not, and thought,
“Wow, I love what they’re doing. I should create something just like it…”?
If you have — hold up. Don’t do that. Super bad option.
Now, don’t get me wrong—being inspired by someone else? Totally normal. Totally okay. Who hasn’t been? But copying their format, their vibe, hoping it’ll bring you the same results? That’s a one-way trip to burnout, creative block, and bad karma, my friend.
Aside from the legality issues, loss of brand equity and loss of future opportunities…
You cut yourself short because here’s the thing:
You’ve been gifted with your own talents, your own voice, your own set of skills, a personality, a unique life background filled with experiences that have only been experienced through your eyes, which carries a unique powerful story that no one else on the planet has.
You’ve got things you love—and things you don’t. And when you try to copy and paste someone else’s tailored success plan, hoping it’ll work for you? You’re basically telling the universe, “I don’t trust what I bring to the table, I haven’t genuinely worked for it and I don’t deserve it.”
Your subconscious mind will tell you, others and the universe the truth and that is not good.
That energy friend does not serve you. Not in your business, not in your confidence, not in your alignment.
But let’s talk about those so-called “success strategies”
Yep, I’m talking about all the ‘proven’ formulas and strategies floating around online.
Here’s the deal:
They can definitely be helpful, especially when you’re just starting out.
Some strategies are great for understanding how things work, and heck, I even have and share my own tried-and-true blueprints right here on the blog!
But here’s the truth, love bug:
They’re tools—not shortcuts—and they’re definitely not meant to be copied and called your own.
Your business isn’t meant to be a remix of someone else’s.
You’re not here to blend in—you’re here to create something bold, meaningful, and entirely yours.
And you’ll know it’s yours because it won’t look, sound, or feel like anything else out there.
It’ll carry your energy. Your voice. Your mission.
And when people come across it, they’ll feel that.
They’ll say:
“Oh, that’s so your brand.”
or “Yeah, that’s definitely aligned with your mission.”
That’s the power of originality.
You don’t want them to say:
Wait, that sounds like [someone else’s] brand…”
Or worse, “That looks like [another business]”—Yikes!
📌 Inspired already? Pin this for later and spread that Kendrick-style love with your biz besties.
When it’s your idea, you know your original DNA is all over it—your story, your mission, your style, your quirks.
Psst: By the way, I teach my clients how to identify and do this effortlessly with their business and content-driven websites: HERE.
Now, if you want to say it like Kendrick Lamar would—‘They not like us’—it all starts with embracing originality.
2. Go Against the Grain, Love Bug!
Alright, for all my “follow the rules” folks out there, hear me out.
Of course, follow the basics—be fair, do business legally, with integrity, and all that good stuff.
But, I strongly believe that building a business you truly believe in and love should involve some aspects that just don’t sound or feel like what everyone else in your niche is doing.
Now, there are a lot ways to do this. Trust me, I could probably write a whole other blog post listing them all and maybe soon hahaha.
But seriously, you don’t need that many.
At least one thing, and even better—a few things—will make a difference.
So, how do you do this?
First, I want you to ask yourself: when you show up in your business or showcase your products, does it truly feel like you? Or do you feel like you’re just following some invisible rulebook that says, ‘This is how it has to look’—and even worse, following that ‘Do it this way or you’ll fail’ mentality?
Trust me, love bug, avoid both.
Why? Because—YOU MATTER. Your business needs your unique fingerprint on it.
Your business doesn’t need to look or sound like someone else’s rulebook. It needs to feel and sound like your idea.
For example, with Blogging For Africa, I do things with my own style, my business is thriving, and I still make a difference.
The secret is that I focus on what works for me, what I love, and most importantly, what is 100% mine.
Honestly, anything else would be too boring.
I have zero desire to do things like others when I know I have my own ideas.
I personally LOVE originality, and it’s what drives me to create something unique—which is why I’m so passionate about blogging, creativity, website design, and marketing.
✨Plus, adding originality to my clients’ websites is one of my personal favorites—it’s all about making each brand feel truly one-of-a-kind.
And here’s the thing — I’ve seen so many business owners quit because their business doesn’t feel like them. They feel like they’re playing by someone else’s rules instead of infusing their own personality, mission, beliefs and personalized marketing strategies into their business.
So here’s your second step: Be like Kendrick Lamar. Go against the grain. Infuse at least one (if not several) elements in your business that scream your unique personality and DNA.
Will it take courage? Absolutely, but here’s the thing—it’s YOU.
It’s your style, your essence, your vibe, and your idea. Trust me, you’ll love your business more for it.
3. Play to your strengths!
Okay, so this one’s my personal favorite: Play to your strengths.
One of the biggest reasons it’s important to create your unique formula, style, and vibe for your business is because it allows you to build a strategy that leans into your strengths as the CEO (aka the owner and visionary) of your business.
Knowing what you’re good at and focusing on those things makes content creation feel way more aligned and less like a chore.
Just look at Kendrick Lamar. In his track “They Not Like Us,” he didn’t try to fit into anyone else’s style or sound — he doubled down on his own voice, delivery, and storytelling. That’s what made the track hit so hard. It wasn’t about doing what everyone else was doing. It was about playing to his unique strengths — and that’s exactly what made it big time.
So, for example, if you’re great on camera but hate writing, then be on camera. That doesn’t mean you never write at all — of course not. But it does mean that the majority of your focus and content can revolve around video. That’s your zone of genius, so own it.
Hopefully that makes sense.
And don’t stress about being amazing at everything.
You’ll eventually be able to outsource the stuff you don’t enjoy or aren’t great at, whether that’s now or later down the line.

4. Your Business Needs a Mission!
One of the biggest trends in business is the “make money” niche, and while I’m obviously HUGE on bringing in profits for your business, a legacy-focused business is deeper than that.
The business you’re in, if your end goal is legacy, needs to have a mission that’s bigger than just yourself and even your drive to make money.
It should be a business with a focus on helping others solve a problem in one way or another. I highly recommend having a business where YOU resonate with the resolution your product or service can offer.
Yes, you can hire salespeople to sell your products and services for you — sure. But think about how much more powerful it would be to stand behind a business you personally have a passion for, knowing the mission is big and will make a difference in someone else’s life.
That’s something you have to look within to discover what the product or service will mean for you, and it should light you up in one way or another.
Lastly, have fun, love bug!💃🏽
I know everyone enjoys life and business in many different ways, but I also know that when you start implementing the strategies above, it’s going to be so much easier to not only make great profits but also have a lot of fun in the process — and might I add, in a “They Not Like Us” Kendrick Lamar style kind of way.
Celebrate your BIG & small wins, and know that I’m rooting for your success!
Okay, until next time. Cheers!🥂
